There are two stories about Mr. James Hall, the man who originally named the town of Elk Grove. One story says there were so many elk in the area that it must be an elk grove. The other story says the town where Mr. James is from in Missouri, had the same name.
The Hall family, arriving in California in 1850, and opening a hotel on the road between the towns of Sacramento and Stockton, called his stage stop “The Elk Grove Hotel and Stage Stop”. A stage line was established 1850 and this road became known as the Upper Stockton Road. Before Mr. Hall moved to Vallejo and later dying in 1876, many a traveler would use the hotel and stage stop as a stopover.
About a mile east of Elk Grove the Western Division of the Central Pacific Railroad came through in 1868 and another hotel called the Elk Grove Hotel” was built causing much confusion for researchers sorting out the Elk Grove past.
